Mike Swain is a respected artist working in the field of woodturning, spending most of his time creating works for sale through exhibitions and galleries.
Having studied with and worked alongside leading turners in other countries, his skills differ from the majority of turners in the United Kingdom in that he adds decoration to his work. This usually in the form of colour, texture, scorching or piercing which he does with a high speed dental drill, these allowing for extra visual and tactile dimensions to the finished pieces he makes.
Most of Mike’s work is turned from the lighter, native hardwoods, especially sycamore which is readily available in the larger sizes he works in. The whiteness of this timber providing him with a basis to work from as a canvas provides the basis for an artists work.
Part of his work includes helping other turners through a teaching programme, the teaching is done to help move a turner’s work on from general craft based woodturning into the field of artforms. He demonstrates to clubs, the general public and schools. Mike also tests and help develop tools and equipment associated with woodturning for manufacturers from around the world.
He has work in many galleries and also has work in collections throughout the UK, the United States, Australia and parts of Europe. Mike was recently awarded a grant from the Arts Council to study surface decoration for woodturning with some of the World’s leading turners.
